The Society of Western Artists (SWA) Gallery in Redwood City recently exhibited the Paintings and Drawings, Mixed Media, and 3-Dimensional art of the International Baccalaureate, 1A, Photography Ceramics of student-artists of Sequoia High School. The Opening Reception Sunday the 24th was attended by a number of RWC dignitaries: Lorraine Rumley, VP Sequoia District Trustees, Sequoia High School Principal, Bonnie Hansen, Alicia Aquirre, Vice Mayor, Barbara Pierce, City Council and Chris Beth, Director of Parks and Recreation, Carolyn Livengood, San Mateo County Times and Barbara Britschgi, President of the Redwood City Art Center, members of the SWA Society, Sequoia Art Society, the family, friends and the public. At the Reception the Out-reach Project Chair, Alisan Andrews, explained that SWA is a representational art, signature, exhibiting and educating society started in the 1920's. The Out-reach program includes the exhibit in the gallery by the students and demonstrations of technique and style in the classroom by members who have received their of Signature Award. Ms. Andrews introduced the Sequoia Instructors: Mozelle (Mozy) deCosta Pinto and Kate Sheehan, (Lindsey Becker could not be present), who presented the certificates and announced the winners in the various categories. Best in Show went to Lindsey Eifert for her Prom Dress made of "Trash", which was accompanied by her photographic book showing her wearing the dress as well as others she has made. The winners for Painting and Drawing: 1st Place: Brandon Chase, 2nd. Place Camilo Delay, 3rd. Danny Raggio and Honorable Mention, Palani Akana. Mixed media winners: 1st Place, Sergio Mendoza, 2nd. Place, Megan Beach , 3rd Place, Christian Juarez and Honorable Mention, Brianna Carroll. Three-Dimensional Art winners: 1st Place, Hung Truong, 2nd. Place Olivia Mariucci, 3rd Place, Isabel Prieto and Honorable Mention, Monica Arana. Several of the Seniors-artists have already been accepted to art academies here and abroad and one three-dimensional piece has been purchased. There were a total of 61 pieces of outstanding work from 46 young artists.
