SWA Exhibit December 7 - January 27, 2012 Gallery Hours: Wednesday - Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
1st Place - Lynette Cook "Archway to the Sky", Acrylic
Lynette Cook grew up in Southern Illinois, attended college in Mississippi, then moved to the San Francisco Bay Area for graduate school. Most widely known as an out-of-this-world scientific illustrator, she has enthralled others with her depictions of planets discovered outside our solar system. These have been published worldwide and featured on ABC7 News and in USA Today.
Though Lynette began as a traditional artist, technological shifts in the illustration world pulled her toward digital methods. Introspection resulting from a breast cancer diagnosis in 2009 led Cook to the realize how much she missed the feel of “real”brushes and paint. Returning full circle to her fine art roots via her favorite medium, acrylics, Lynette explores earthly subjects again: landscapes, scenes of everyday life, and brick structures that create a metaphor for the human existence.

2nd Place - Carrie Drilling, SWA "Mumms the Word" , Watercolor
I started my art training at College of San Mateo in 1999. I have completed numerous courses in drawing, color theory, art history, design, ceramics and watercolor. It was after taking my first drawing class that I started to look at the world through new eyes, seeing color and shapes that I had just taken for granted previously.
I have studied with Kay Carnie, watercolor instructor at CSM, a fabulous teacher who inspires and encourages her students. I have also taken watercolor classes through the Senior Centers with John Warner and Joyce Faulkner, learning something new from each instructor.
My painting style is realistic and detailed. I love the translucency of watercolor that is possible with many layers of light washes. I mix my own colors using the primaries, both in my palette and sometime directly on the paper.
My favorite artist is Georgia O’Keefe, and my greatest fans and supporters are my family.
